The Driving Instructors Scottish Council is a body of representatives of most of the Approved Driving Instructors associations in Scotland, thus giving a voice to almost two thirds of the country's Instructors. It has consultative status with the Driving Standards Agency and is in regular and frequent contact with it's officials, therefore being able to instantly liaise on any subject connected with road safety and the well being of instructors. The Council has representation in Parliament in the person of Alasdair Morgan MP. who is willing to raise matters in the House when appropriate. The council are at present campaigning on a subject that is close to the heart of all Driving Instructors, namely The Register of Approved Driving Instructors. This subject will be discussed at the Council's forthcoming conference to be held in Perth. Continuous Professional Development With this in mind we have developed a programme, which will include talks at meetings, starting with check-test preparation, and going on to cover other aspects of giving instruction. We have engaged the services of Aeneas MacRitchie who offers instructor re-training. Members are able to contact him for individual in-car consultation between seminars. We also want to see the scope of the development programme widened to include topics such as fleet driver training, legal aspects and business management and the Cardington Advanced driving test. We come to only one conclusion. Under the control the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has of our profession with the divisive and fragmented consultative procedures that exist, our profession is going downhill fast. The DI industry must take control of the register and run it’s own affairs.
